Innovation as Tradition – Inuit Batiks from Nunavik, Canada

Batik is a textile tradition from Southeast Asia that became popular in large parts of the world during the 1960’s and 70’s. In 1973, a Malaysian born artist went to Povungnituk in Arctic Quebec to train Inuit artists in this tradition. The result are extraordinary pieces that blend this textile tradition with the visual language of the Arctic. Museum Cerny owns 15 of them that are on show for the first time ever. Daily guided tours will occur at 3pm to introduce visitors to this unique collection during April 15 – 21, 2021.
