TENGEZA TRAIL CAMPAIGN: Cultivating creativity within deaf communities
Tengeza Trail is a campaign that enables arts access to young deaf artists through provision of free production materials and supplies. The campaign name which means “to make” in Swahili encourages craft makers to donate their excess/ scrap materials to Sekoya East Africa where we upcycle and package them into art tool-kits given to deaf institutions. Since its inception in 2017, Tengeza Trail has reached 150 young deaf creatives, involved 33 artists and 15 volunteers, and received support from about 10 corporate donors. Initially it was marked through an in-person immersive craft experience but due to COVID restrictions we will only be making donations of supplies and craft tutorials to the institutions, hence the extension to a month long campaign. It will be an honour for Tengeza Trail in its forth season to join artists around the world in celebrating the integral role of creativity in our society.
