The Importance of the Pub: The Value and Aesthetics of Third Places

Sociologists use the term third places to refer to the “core settings of informal public life such as English pubs, French cafes, and American taverns. I’m going to talk about the aesthetics elements of such places and why they are so important to our lives. Although I will talk about a range of third places, I will focus to some extent on English pubs, since I love them–and miss them–very much.
