Center for Creative Solutions, Inc.® Sponsors Celebration of World Creativity and Innovation Week 2022 in Northwest Indiana
“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have,” American poet, Maya Angelou, once observed.
Northwest Indiana is proving her right. For the 12th consecutive year, the region is celebrating World Creativity and Innovation Week April 15-21. This year’s theme is “Collaboration: Working Together Creatively.”
The week starts with two tours. The first one is at The Exchange, the new makerspace sponsored by the La Porte County Public Library at 807 Indiana Avenue, La Porte. There, “you will discover tools and learning opportunities to help you create and innovate!” said Pam Okuson, the library’s Community Learning Manager.
The Exchange is a multi-use community space meant for creation and collaboration. Inside, there are meeting rooms, a makerspace, study pods, audio and visual recording studios, and more, she said. You may tour the facility anytime, Monday through Thursday, from 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.,
Friday, 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., and Saturday, 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Also during the week’s celebration, the Lubeznik Center for the Arts is sponsoring a special exhibit, LatinXAmerican, 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. It is free and open to the public at the Center, located at 101 West 2nd Street, Michigan City.
The exhibit, on loan from the DePaul Art Museum in Chicago, features Latinx artists. It reflects a multi-year initiative to increase the visibility of Latinx artists and voices in museums working toward equity and lasting transformation, according to Janet Bloch, Lubeznik Center Director. It includes photographs, paintings, works on paper, sculptures, textiles, videos and installations from artists living in the United States and Puerto Rico.
On Monday, April 18, the Center for Creative Solutions will present the Tej Ram Gupta scholarships to three A. K. Smith Career Center students. The awards are made yearly in conjunction with Dr. Rakish and Bina Gupta and the B. R. Foundation of Michigan City. Throughout April, other area youth will be honored for innovative projects and products, thanks to the generosity of the Morgan Family Foundation.
On Tuesday, April 19, tune in to WIMS radio at 95.1 FM/AM 1420 and Valparaiso 106.7 FM and hear about regional innovation. Appearing will be Jason Williams, Managing Director of the Society of Innovators at Purdue Northwest and Keri Marrs Barrón, Director of the Porter County Recycling and Waste Management District.
The second WIMS program on April 21 will focus on past and current innovators from the area. Guests include Bruce Johnson, La Porte County Historian; Fonda Owens, Director of the La Porte County Public Library; and Williams.
Each program starts at 7:30 a.m. (CST) and the public is invited to weigh in on the conversations. Joining the guests will be student poets, along with Bill Halliar, Dale Cooper and Cindy Hedge from the Center for Creative Solutions.
On Wednesday, April 20, the Michigan City Public Library, 100 East 4th Street, will host a greeting card activity at 4:00 a.m. Students will design cards that light up with paper circuits.
Throughout the week, student winners in the Poetry Showcase will read their poems on WIMS radio. All student and adult poets will receive a commemorative book of all poems.
Sponsors for World Creativity and Innovation Week are WIMS Radio, Society of Innovators at Purdue Northwest, “Arts on the Air” program on Southshore Public Radio, the Society of Innovators at Purdue Northwest and the Center for Creative Solutions, Inc., a non-profit organization devoted to encouraging an innovative culture in Northwest Indiana.
