CINC Idea Jam: A Grounded Theoretical Process for Revealing an Imaginative Leadership Style

In this Jam, Paul shares his research findings from his thesis investigation into the imaginative capabilities of educational leaders and the processes underpinning their development. The research uses a grounded theory methodology to analyze interviews with educational leaders recognized for driving innovation and social change. Emergent themes, derived through open, axial, and selective coding, conceptualize two core behavioural patterns, Sense–Think–Act and Ponder–Enact–Play, encompassing six imaginative capabilities. These findings address the gap in leadership theories by providing novel insights into imagination as malleable holistic behaviour extending beyond the mind to include the body and context. Moreover, the findings reveal imaginative leadership as a distinct leadership style. The study underscores the need for imaginative leadership to address complex challenges in educational contexts, contributing new theory to the underexplored domain of imaginative practice in leadership.
